We create custom bifold doors and sliding doors made of solid timber and weatherproof glass. We have done hundreds of both and have a legion of satisfied customers. One of the questions we are often asked is “Which is best for my home?” While there isn’t really a “one size fits all” solution, here are things to consider when deciding which is better for you.
Sliding Doors
Sliding doors are probably the ultimate space savers. Because the two panels slide parallel to each other, there is no clearance space necessary when the door is opened. Some sliding doors, called “cavity doors,” can even be hidden in the walls.
In addition, sliding doors offer a great view to the outdoors. They also let in a lot of light, making your home look and feel larger. Since ours are built with natural insulators, they help save you money on heating and cooling costs.
The only drawback to sliding doors is that they can only be opened to half of the width of the door. One panel slides while the other remains stationary. This does restrict the width of the opening for alfresco living.

Bifold Doors
Bifold doors are the best doors for integrating the indoors and outdoors, such as an alfresco living area and your living room. They can be opened almost the entire width of the door because they are made of panels on hinges that lie flat against each other at one or both sides of the door when opened. While they don’t require clearance, they do take up a small amount of space at the side of the door.
They are also insulative when closed because they are made of the same materials as our sliding doors. They also provide great views and a lot of sunlight.
